bugger

BUGGER

I broke my foot.

Honestly.

I fell last night, at about tea-time - went over on my ankle on the front drive and ended up in a sprawling, unattractive heap on the gravel. I knew at the time that I had hurt myself but, being a woman, I went into denial mode and told myself that it would all be better in the morning.

Anyway, this morning I was resorting to crawling on my hands and knees and sliding down the stairs on my bum. My foot had, at this point, swollen to resemble a small Christmas pudding, so I slowly came to the realisation that all was not well.

Cue a trip to our local A&E department and a 3 hour wait, several x-rays and then the not-so-good news. All credit to the Doctor though, he did try to cushion the blow....

'Well, deadly female, the good news is that your wrist and ankle are absolutely fine. The bad news is that your foot is not. It's broken.'

The upshot of it is that they were unable to put it into plaster today as it is just too swollen. So I have soft bandages all the way up to my knee - not a good look, trust me on this one! And I was issued with a lovely pair of crutches which are hellishly hard to use - I have no upper body strength at all, I now realise, and the sight of me trying to get up the driveway I fell down last night, on crutches, will probably give my neighbours amusing anecdotes for years to come.

I'm back at the hospital on 29th December to see the fracture specialist - and this is where it gets nasty. Because of where the break is, I may need surgery to pin the bone back together before they can put a cast on. I'm under strict instructions to put no weight on it whatsoever and to rest, rest and rest.

So there we have it. Bring on the industrial strength painkillers.....

I'm with Nikki on that...crutches play hell with your armpits and if you have to stay off that foot for an extended length of time, a wheelchair is gonna be the way to go.

Hope they gave you some kick ass painkillers!! :) Feel better soon!
